Nimon was determined to get her education no matter what, but it wasn’t always easy. Like many girls in her community, Nimon was in and out of school because her family wasn’t able to afford the school fees or supplies.
Then she applied to the WISER Girls secondary school.
WISER International (Opens in a new tab), supported by the Girls Opportunity Alliance, runs a secondary boarding school to provide education and holistic support for adolescent girls. In addition to high-quality education with an emphasis on STEM, WISER provides girls with safe housing, material support, leadership training, and other health services to help them succeed in school.
Nimon remembers looking the admissions officer in the eye and promising: “If you admit me into your school, I will outscore the other students you have admitted already.” She started at WISER the next month and kept her promise, becoming one of the top ten graduating students of her class.
Nimon became the first person in her family to attend high school and college. She went on to study education technology at the University of Eldoret in Kenya, pursuing her dreams of becoming a teacher. She says, “I want to help other girls get their education, just like I did.”
In a region where only 9% of girls finish school, WISER’s graduation rate is 100%, with 93% enrolling in college. Through organizations like WISER, young women like Nimon are empowered to drive transformative change for their communities and uplift those that follow in their footsteps.
